  • Does South Africa recognise Cambridge qualifications?

    British Curriculum:

    • The Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level is equivalent to a South African Grade 12 (matric), however there are strict requirements regarding subject combinations and exams sittings in terms of university exemption in South Africa. Please refer to this document set out by Universities South Africa (USAf) which explains these requirements in detail.

    CAPS:

    • CambriLearn is registered with SACAI and students completing Grade 12 will receive a South African National Senior Certificate.
  • Is CambriLearn a registered school?

CambriLearn is a SACAI registered online school in South Africa. We are also internationally accredited by Cognia and Pearson Edexcel. High school students enrolled in the British Curriculum will write external exams as private candidates and will receive their certificates directly from the examining body.

  • Are the teachers qualified?

Yes, all of our teachers are qualified, most of them having many years of experience teaching the relevant syllabi. Many of our Cambridge teachers have had top students in South Africa and have had students placed top 3 in the world for their respective subjects.

  • How will my studies be flexible?

    British Curriculum:

    • This curriculum is flexible, and you will be able to start at any time of the year. The courses are self-paced and do not align with any specific calendar dates. You will schedule time off and holidays as suits you best.
    • Bear in mind, the courses are based on a 30–34-week program and the subscriptions are valid for 12 months (52 weeks). Subscriptions can be extended if needed. Note that Live Lessons will start with the topic covered in 'Week 1' each January. Should you start at a different time of the year, the Live Lesson topic each week may not correlate with the content that you are currently working on. Students are still encouraged to join live lessons as they will serve as an introduction to upcoming topics or revision for topics already covered and the teacher's guidance and interaction are invaluable.
    • These lessons are recorded, and students can access the recorded lessons at any time. The recorded lesson library is utilised by students who are unable to attend Live Lessons or for revision purposes. The recorded lessons are valid / current no matter the date that they were uploaded as the topic and content covered remains applicable to the course.
    • At IGCSE, AS and A levels external exams are available twice a year in May/June and October / November. Please keep this in mind and plan accordingly. The courses are designed to prepare students for these exams, and they are advised to complete them, allowing at least 6 weeks for revision and past papers. NB: IGCSE, AS and A Level student; be sure to register to write external exams with an accredited exam center at least 4 months ahead of time.

    CAPS:

    • This curriculum follows the South African Government school term dates (National Curriculum). There is some flexibility as you can structure your child’s day-to-day learning in the way that suits you best. They are, however, expected to complete the coursework and assessments for a particular term, by the end of that term. This is closely monitored in the FET Phase (Grades 10-12).
  • How do I socialise when schooling with CambriLearn?

There are multiple options for socialisation at CambriLearn.

    The Student Forum:

    • All students can make use of the 'Student Forum' section on the platform to socialise with each other online. They will only have access to forums related to their own grades and subjects.

    Facebook Groups:

    • There are a vast number of Facebook groups that homeschooling families can join to network. WhatsApp and Facebook Communities:
    • Parents can connect with other parents to find socialisation opportunities on our WhatsApp community or our CambriLearn Facebook group.

    Tutor Centres:

    • They could join a tutor centre if they prefer in-person interaction with other learners of their age group. Discord:
    • For our high school students, we've created a CambriLearn Crew Discord Server that functions as a real-time chat channel where students can discuss schoolwork, movies, books, and series as well as share art and music.

    Social Events:

    • On occasion, social events will be available for students to attend. These will be area-based and available in South Africa only. Details will be communicated on WhatsApp groups and social media.

    Virtual Events:

    • Various competitions are held virtually including writing and drawing competitions and our virtual talent show.
  • Do you cater for special needs?

Although our teachers aren't special needs trained, we do find many dyslexic /on-spectrum students prefer our platform simply because of the self-paced nature of learning. Students can take their time and work at a pace that's comfortable for them. It is something that needs to be looked at on a case-by-case basis and depends on severity.

With us, students don't take as many subjects as they do in traditional school, which also helps them a lot. Additionally, we can offer students concessions for their special needs. You can download the CambriLearn Special Needs Toolkit to find out how we cater to special needs students here.

  • What support can I expect as a student?

CambriLearn supports both parents and children in their homeschooling journey. If you’re a parent who’s working full-time, and your child is without additional tutor support, we strongly urge you to consider the Premium Package, as it provides additional support from teachers to help students master their coursework.

This means that you can ask your teachers specific questions and receive a personal reply in a private chat. From a technology perspective, we recommend an uncapped internet connection. Our learning platform can be accessed from laptops and tablets alike. Mobile phones can be used to access information/videos but are less versatile for daily learning.

A printer is convenient, however, print shops can be utilised as an alternative. Access to a scanner or mobile scanning app is required.

Finally, you'll also need to purchase textbooks (where applicable) which are used to supplement the course content.

  • Can I pay in any currency?

Prices are quoted in US dollars unless otherwise stipulated. If you are paying by card, your bank will handle the currency conversion for you. If you are paying by EFT, you can use the exchange rate on the date of transaction to calculate the fee due in your own currency.

  • What are the payment options?

When you purchase a course on our site, you agree to our terms and conditions which state (Section 3):

When you subscribe you will have the option to pay via Credit Card, Debit Card (Mastercard or Visa) or EFT.

If you elect to pay by Credit Card, you may: (i) pay the full amount upfront; or (ii) pay the amount off over 10 months (at an additional charge).

If you elect to pay by way of EFT, an invoice will be emailed to you, and you are required to pay 100% upfront (no payment plan options via EFT). Once we have received 100% of the funds, we will activate your subscription and access to our site.

Should you have elected to pay your subscription over 10 months, and the student finishes their course in a shorter time, you are still liable to complete all payments until the full amount owing has been paid.

Should you wish to cancel your subscription please contact us at hello@cambrilearn.com. Please note that a cancellation fee may be charged. NOTE: When you pay by card, choosing the 10-month payment plan, you agree to 10 equal USD instalments to be deducted from the card you provide, for 10 consecutive months.

As we charge in USD this means that instalment amounts will fluctuate as they are dependent on the exchange rate. Please note that the Rand amounts stated on the website are for demonstrative purposes and are indicative only.

The billing date would be the day that you made your initial purchase. This can be changed from your profile at a later stage.

Terms and conditions can be read in full here.

  • How do I request a report card?

    International British Curriculum:

Report cards can only be generated if the student has completed all formal assessments. If a student has not completed all formal assessments, you will not be able to get a report card.

Please follow these steps to request a report card:

    • Step 1: Log in to the guardian profile and click on the relevant student's name.
    • Step 2: If all assessments have been completed and marked for all the courses of the applicable level, click on the 'Request Report Card' button in the top right corner.
    • Step 3: Select all the courses for that level and click on the 'Submit' button.

The report card will be sent by email as soon as it has been approved. Please note, the guardian profile needs to be linked to the student profile if you would like to request the report card.

    CAPS Curriculum:

    • CAPS Report cards are automatically generated once all the Term's assessments have been completed and marked.
    • Please note that report cards will only be generated once the learner has completed all formal assessments for that Term.
  • Can I upload bulk submissions?

It is advised that students submit one assessment for marking at a time per subject. This is to ensure that students are working through the coursework and assessments in a systematic way, building on their knowledge as they progress. It also means that students get maximum benefit from their teacher's comments and corrections on marked papers and can learn from their mistakes before moving on. This is recommended.

When students submit multiple papers for marking at once, this is considered a 'bulk submission'. This is discouraging as it puts the student at a disadvantage and extends marking times. The aim of assessments is to gauge student progress and to test understanding and knowledge. By rushing through assessments and not waiting for feedback in between, students do not have the opportunity to learn from previous errors and correct them, thereby improving their understanding and academic performance. Students are encouraged to take their time and to complete each assessment to the best of their ability.

Teachers aim to mark student assessments within an 8-working day period. They will mark it sooner than this when they have the capacity to do so. When you submit assessments in bulk, each assessment submission date will be staggered by 2 days each. This means that the overall marking time will be extended.

Therefore, there is little advantage to submitting assessments in bulk.

  • How soon will my assignments be marked and sent back to me?

As per our Terms and Conditions, marking of assessments usually takes place within 8 working days from the date on which the completed assessments are uploaded. However, this period is an estimate only and is dependent on multiple factors including the volume of assessments submitted.

  • How do I register for an external exam?

    British Curriculum:

    • IGCSE, AS Levels & A Level students must write external exams at an exam centre accredited by CAIE/The British Council.
    • You will need to find out where the closest centre is to you and be sure to book exams ahead of time (approx. 4 months) as there are cut-off times for these bookings. These exams are charged for, please be sure to confirm costs directly with the centre well ahead of time.
    • British curriculum external exams are written in two sessions per year, in May/June and October/November.
    • You can find exam centres here or you can contact Tutors and Exams here.

    CAPS:

    • In Grade 12, final exams are written at an external exam centre. CambriLearn will register Grade 12 learners with SACAI who will allocate an exam venue to the learner where they will write their Grade 12 matriculation examinations. These exams can only be written in South Africa, therefore international students will need to travel to South Africa on a study permit to write their matriculation Exams.
    • Exam fees will be confirmed upon registration for Grade 12.
  • What devices is the CambriLearn platform compatible with?

The CambriLearn platform is compatible with laptop, desktop, and tablet devices, without the need for a separate app. Information/videos can be accessed on mobile phones though this option and less versatile for daily learning.
